Faculty Spotlight: Teacher of the Year Dr. Fatma Gunay Elevates UF’s New Online Master’s in Economics Program

Dr. Fatma Gunay, recipient of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences’ Teacher of the Year award in 2022, is shaping the future of online economics education at the University of Florida. She brings both academic expertise and a student-centered approach to UF’s new online master’s in Economics with a concentration in Econometric and Data Analysis. As an associate instructional professor in the Department of Economics, she teaches Game Theory and Industrial Organization (ECO5464) and the second sequence of Econometrics in the program.

Originally from Turkey, Gunay discovered her passion for economics during an undergraduate lecture on George Akerlof’s “Lemons” problem. “It was the first time I saw how a simple but elegant model could explain the complexities of real-world markets,” she said. “That moment sparked a lasting curiosity about economic modeling and strategic behavior, and ultimately led me to pursue graduate studies in economics.” In 2007, Gunay moved to the United States to continue her education and went on to earn a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Gunay’s academic interests include applied microeconomic theory, game theory and information economics. At UF, she found an environment that supports both her instruction and research. “The University of Florida stood out for its commitment to academic excellence and innovation in teaching,” she said. “Becoming part of the Gator Nation has allowed me to pursue my teaching passion while engaging with motivated students from many backgrounds.”

Gunay’s dedication to student success earned her the 2022 Teacher of the Year award, a remarkable standard she continues to uphold in the economics program. “The award reminded me of the impact we can have as educators when we meet students where they are and support their learning journey,” she said. “With the move to the online format, I’m excited to continue innovating in how I deliver content, engage students and provide personalized support.”

Sharing Instructional Talents Online

Gunay teaches two courses in UF’s one-year online master’s in economics program—Game Theory and Industrial Organization (ECO 5464) and Econometric Analysis 2 (ECO 5427). These courses are part of the program’s concentration in econometric and data analysis, which she believes prepares students to succeed in today’s evolving economic landscape. “The concentration provides students with a solid foundation in both economic theory and modern empirical tools,” she said. “The blend of theoretical understanding and hands-on experience with software such as R or Stata gives students a competitive edge in a data-driven economy.”

In her Game Theory and Industrial Organization course, students explore how firms and individuals make strategic decisions in markets where outcomes depend not just on their own actions, but on the behavior of others. The course blends theoretical modeling with real-world applications, covering topics like pricing strategies, market entry, advertising and strategic interaction under varying information structures.

Her Econometrics course introduces more advanced techniques, including panel data models, limited dependent variables and causal inference. “Students can expect to develop strong analytical and coding skills that are essential for applied research and data-driven decision-making,” she said. “Throughout the semester, students will complete a research paper using the tools we cover.”

Gunay believes the online program meets the needs of today’s learners and economics leaders. “The online format offers flexibility for working professionals or those with other commitments, allowing them to advance their education without relocating or disrupting their careers,” she said. “What makes UF’s program unique is the rigor of its curriculum, the quality of the faculty and the integration of data science skills into economic analysis.”

Beyond the classroom, Gunay is an avid gardener and woodworker who enjoys spending time in her backyard while disconnected from screens and immersed in nature. She is also a cycling enthusiast who finds peace and clarity through time outdoors. These hobbies help ground her and inspire the creativity she brings to her economics courses. She is eager to welcome new students to UF’s online master’s in economics program.

“I’m thrilled to be part of this innovative program,” she said. “I look forward to getting to know the students and helping them gain both the confidence and the technical skills to thrive in today’s data-rich, analytically demanding world.”
